As the national voice of the Chief State School Officers in all 50 states and U.S. Territories, CCSSO represents its membership by coordinating consensus on federal education matters before the Administration, Congress, and the U.S. Department of Education.
The Education Workforce initiative focuses on what are arguably the most important factors in student achievement—effective teachers and leaders. CCSSO is calling for states to change the rules, encourage innovation, learn from other sectors, and apply new principles to transform these professions.
The Information Systems and Research initiative engages in collective state leadership and action in three significant areas offering the greatest potential for harnessing the power of information to improve education: Designing robust and comprehensive state information systems and a consistent, safe, and secure information architecture; developing state capacity and practical resources for accessing, analyzing, and using timely information effectively; leading collaborative state, national, and international efforts to examine trends and patterns in education.
The Next Generation Learners (NxGL) initiative concentrates on the elements of education that have direct bearing on students and their learning experiences. Our work with states focuses on learners and learning, rather than on schools and schooling-a bold approach to improving education that puts the needs and interests of children-from birth through adolescence-front and center, rather than on adults or the system. This approach is a fundamental departure from past education reforms.
The Standards, Assessment, and Accountability Initiative focuses on the three historical and most powerful drivers of education systems. State by state, we have made progress in these areas over the past decade-but we need to continue to support and effect the transformative change that will truly prepare every child, in every school, for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
