| Middle Grades Reform Project |
This is no longer an active project. The description below is for informational purposes only.
On July 21-23, 2002, the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), in partnership with the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform and the Urban Middle-Grades Reform Network sponsored a working conference in Washington, DC of educators and advocates for middle grades school improvement to consider the opportunities provided by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB).
The conference sought to stimulate renewed and deeper efforts to improve the quality of middle grade education through the use of new federal tools and funds. The three organizations invited members of their networks who were committed to middle grade reform and located in positions where they could leverage NCLB opportunities into state and district action.
With the assistance of expert presentations and peer learning discussions, conference participants gained new knowledge and considered strategies to accelerate and sustain improvement in the school learning environments of adolescent students. The agenda provided the participants with a mix of plenary presentations and discussions, simultaneous workshops, and small discussion groups. Topics addressed included opportunities provided by the No Child Left Behind Act, using NCLB funds to support middle grade improvement, comprehensive school reform, and reporting of data and public engagement.
CCSSO plans to continue attention on the middle grades level and with its convening partners has prepared a conference proceedings document titled "The Opportunity to Leave No Child Behind in the Middle Grades."
