| Addressing the Challenges: Counseling, Psychological, and Social Services
Counseling, psychological, and social services support social and emotional well-being and help schools respond to crises. A growing number of children and adolescents are experiencing serious problems that interfere with their ability to learn and perform in the classroom. Many students at high risk of failing to achieve academically are from impoverished areas or are recently arrived immigrants. The problems these students bring to schools are often attributable to conditions they face before even reaching kindergarten. These problems include inadequate basic resources, psychological problems, stressful home situations, crises, and dramatic life transitions. Counseling, psychological and social services can not only help students with problems, but help all students with self-esteem, integrity, temperament, personal behavior, health maintenance, and creativity.
