Addressing the Challenges:  Food and Nutrition Services

Food services ensure access to nutritious, affordable, appealing foods in an environment that supports healthy eating behaviors. School policies promote the provision of health foods and beverages in a la cart sales, vending machines, as snacks, and at all school-sponsored events. Proper nutrition is essential for children to be ready to learn, and even moderate undernutrition or hunger can cause a reduction in cognitive development and school performance. One study found that among low-income elementary schools students, those who participated in the School Breakfast Program had higher test scores and lower rates of tardiness and absenteeism. In addition to school performance, diet is connected to many physical health problems including obesity, eating disorders, and dental health. Establishing an unhealthy diet in childhood can lead to many chronic problems in adulthood such as hypertension, heart disease, and diabetes.
