| Addressing the Challenges: Health Services
Health services provide access to preventive services, emergency care, management of acute and chronic health conditions, and referral to appropriate providers for students. Because most children over the age of 5 attend school, the school becomes an ideal place to provide certain preventive services, such as screenings for vision and hearing. Many schools offer health services that would typically be difficult for students to obtain; especially students who are poor and uninsured. Approximately 85 percent of public school systems offer some form of health services.
