A process through which the criteria for assessment are derived directly from content and/or performance standards.

Explanatory Comments
- Standards-based assessment is a logical next step following the development of standards.
- In a sequential process to implement standards-based education, each step is informed by the previous step or steps and the sequential process is represented as follows: Content and performance standards-->Standards-based assessments-->Instruction for learning.
- Standards-based assessment differs from traditional assessment by
- closely linking assessment to curriculum
- comparing students to a standard of achievement, not to other students
- incorporating new forms of assessment (ECS, 2002)
