Alignment Analysis
CCSSO has collaborated in the development of two models for analyzing the alignment of content standards and assessments, and these models have assisted states in conducting studies on alignment. The SEC model can be used to analyze alignment of instructional content with standards and assessments, and degree of alignment can be compared among states. The Webb model provides statistics on the degree of intersection of the subject content in state standards with the corresponding state assessment. Both models were developed for math and science but have been applied to other core academic subjects. Reports from recent studies with states are available from CCSSO.
State Content Standards & Frameworks
CCSSO maintains a current 50-state directory of all state content standards and curriculum frameworks in mathematics and science that are published by state departments of education. The listing includes the publication title, the year published, and its availability on the Internet through state websites. In the 1990s CCSSO produced two reports on the development of state math and science frameworks and standards (1995, 1997). See CCSSO Publications for more information.
Surveys of Enacted Curriculum
CCSSO has worked with educators and researchers to develop a practical research tool for obtaining reliable, comparable data on classroom instructional practices and subject content. Applications include alignment analysis, instructional improvement, evaluation of initiatives, and indicators for monitoring educational progress. An online, Web-based system of data collection and reporting is now available through CCSSO collaboration with the Wisconsin Center for Education Research.
Summary of Findings from SSI
CCSSO recently completed a special study for the National Science Foundation (NSF) on what was learned from the Statewide Systemic Initiatives (SSI) program. The report summarize findings from a range of studies and from state experience, and provides recommendations for other federal and state cooperation.
