| Strengthening Partnerships for Native American Student Education |

CCSSO recognizes the importance of focusing attention on the educational needs and strengths of Native students through concerted effort to improve academic outcomes. Commitment to high standards for Native American youth can successfully be achieved with meaningful partnerships among key stakeholders. This project grew out of a request for assistance from several chief state school officers who have large Native American student populations. The purpose of the initiative is to foster partnerships regionally and within states designed to address the challenges posed by the No Child Left Behind Act for those state leaders.
CCSSO is actively working with chief state school officers, state education agency representatives, Native and tribal leaders, and national and local organizations in order to do the following:
- Assist states in developing an internal systemic plan for Native American education that is aligned to each state’s school improvement strategy.
- Build a mechanism for state agencies and other organizations to work across states and advance the goals outlined above.
- Plan and convene networking meetings with those who can influence change in the education of Native American youth including chief state school officers, Native American education leaders, Native American leaders from outside the education field who can support the education agenda, and representatives from institutions of higher education and other organizations.
- Draft a policy statement on the No Child Left Behind Act and Native American education to be vetted by Native members and other organizations and supported by CCSSO.
