Membership Meetings

In order to meet ongoing and emerging professional development and technical assistance needs of chief state school officers and state education agencies, the Council of Chief State School Officers holds over two hundred meetings per year.

Four of those are annual meetings for the Council's primary members: chief state school officers and their deputies and federal liaison representatives. Click here to access the upcoming major member meeting schedule.

  1. The Annual Policy Forum and Business Meeting, held in the fall, facilitates the on-going work of the Council by providing CCSSO members the opportunity to focus on issues in education, develop and approve Council position statements, and plan for the Council's actions in the year to come. This meeting also elects the officers of the Council.
  2. The work of the Legislative Conference, held late winter/early spring, centers on federal actions and their effect on the states. It provides CCSSO members with up-to-the-minute information on the federal legislative agenda, as well as opportunities to revamp the Council's stance on the issues. It also provides opportunities for CCSSO members to meet with elected officials and discuss the states' education challenges.
  3. The Deputies' Spring Academy, begun in 2003, is an annual professional development conference for deputy chief state school officers. The Deputies' Leadership Commission (DLC) is comprised of one deputy chief state school officer per state, as appointed by their chiefs.
  4. The Summer Institute, held mid-summer, is the premier professional development conference for chief state school officers. The institute provides chiefs the opportunity to interact with nationally recognized researchers and experts in the various fields impacting education. The institute also allows chiefs time for in-depth study of issues central to the mission of the Council.
