School Readiness Indicators Initiative (SRI)

Since January 2002, the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) has been a technical assistance partner organization in the School Readiness Indicators (SRI) Initiative—a multi-state project convened to develop comprehensive state-based sets of school readiness indicators in order to inform public policy for young children and their families. The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and the Ford Foundation have sponsored this initiative – to date – with CCSSO’s partnership supported by the Packard Foundation through June 30, 2003, and since that time by the Kauffman Foundation.

CCSSO’s contributions to the SRI work have included connecting the state education agency chiefs and their early childhood specialists to each of the 17 state teams, assuring their involvement and participation in the forums and networks hosted by the project, and the collective indicators developed by the states.

CCSSO participates as a technical assistance partner in all of the project activities, including the national forums and roundtables, the State Early Childhood Policy Technical Assistance Network (SECPTAN) and the electronic list-serves associated with the initiative.

You can find very useful information on the School Readiness Indicators initiative at the Getting Ready website, including relevant reports and articles and all meetings proceedings and materials. SECPTAN has also created essential reports, and technical assistance tools and resources for the project.  You can link to all of these resources at SECPTAN’s FineByNine website.
