Administrative Data Improvement

The Administrative Data Improvement project provides resources and technical assistance to state education agencies for data system improvements and participation in federal data collection efforts.

Funded through a contract with the U.S. Department of Education's (ED) National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), the project supports the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) Statewide Longitudinal Data Systems Grant Program, the work of NCES's Common Core of Data and National Forum on Education Statistics, and ED's EDFacts/Education Data Exchange Network (EDEN).

Specific activities conducted by CCSSO under the project consist of:

SLDS Grant Program
CCSSO staff supports the administration of the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) Statewide Longitudinal Data Systems (SLDS) Grant Program. The Grant Program is designed to aid state education agencies in developing and implementing longitudinal data systems. These systems are intended to enhance the ability of States to efficiently and accurately manage, analyze, and use education data, including individual student records. The data systems developed with funds from these grants should help States, districts, schools, and teachers make data-driven decisions to improve student learning, as well as facilitate research to increase student achievement and close achievement gaps.

EDEN/EDFacts
CCSSO supports ED’s initiative to put performance data at the center of policy, management and budget decisions for all K-12 educational programs. EDFacts centralizes performance data supplied by K-12 state education agencies (SEAs) with other data assets, such as financial grant information, within the Department to enable better analysis and use in policy development, planning and management. CCSSO hosts two meetings a year for SEA EDFacts staff and coordinates online EDFacts trainings. To access meeting materials, please click here.

NCES Forum
CCSSO supports the NCES National Forum on Education Statistics (Forum) Task Forces and Standing Committees. This work helps to improve and create resources for state education agencies (SEA) and local education agencies (LEA).

NCES Personnel Exchange Network
CCSSO administers the NCES Personnel Exchange Network. This program provides travel funds for state or local elementary/secondary education agency staff to visit other education organizations in order to share knowledge about education data issues. More information about the Personnel Exchange Network can be found here on the NCES website.

NCES Data Handbooks
CCSSO supports the development of the NCES Data Handbooks (Handbooks). The Handbooks provide guidance on consistency in data definitions and maintenance for education data, so that such data can be accurately aggregated and analyzed. More information about the Handbooks can be found here on the NCES website.
