| Perkins Vocational and Technology Education Act |
The purpose of the Perkins Act is to prepare students to enter the workforce with the academic and vocational skills needed to compete successfully in a world market. Perkins supports career and technical education that prepares its students both for postsecondary education and the careers of their choice. Federal resources help ensure that career and technical programs are academically rigorous and up-to-date with the needs of business and industry.
Legislative Outlook
The reauthorized Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act was signed into law on August 12, 2006 (P.L. 109-270). The U.S. Department of Education has begun to implement the new law, and in March the Department published a guide to assist state directors of career and technical education in preparing State Plans as required by the Act. To help facilitate the transition, a one year transition plan may be used until June 30, 2008.
