More than 150 state and local leaders representing SAELP I states – Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Virginia – will attend. For speakers and topics, see http://www.ccsso.org/projects/ State_Action_for_Education_Leadership/Meetings/. |
| Why: |
In 2001, 15 states became partners in a three-year project, funded by the Wallace Foundation, to develop and test innovative, coordinated policies and practices that strengthen the ability of education leadership to improve student learning.
This conference celebrates the conclusion of the first phase of the state-based project (SAELP I) and shares lessons and strategies on how state policies and programs can lead to broad improvements in the quality of education leadership and, in turn, improved student performance. It also will support the current 15 states as they respond to the recently released Wallace Foundation Request for Proposals for the second phase of SAELP. In SAELP II, up to 20 states, including the current 15, are eligible to receive, from the Wallace Foundation, grants totaling up to $24 million over the next three years.
The conference is organized by the Council of Chief State School Officers, in partnership with the Education Commission of the States, the National Association of State Boards of Education, the National Conference of State Legislatures, and the National Governors Association, which collectively manage SAELP. |

CCSSO provides leadership, advocacy, and technical assistance on major educational issues. The Council seeks member consensus on major educational issues and expresses their views to civic and professional organizations, federal agencies, Congress, and the public. |
