CCSSO Announces New Executive Director

Chris Minnich has been named Executive Director of the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). The decision follows a nationwide search by CCSSO Board of Directors to find a successor for Gene Wilhoit, after he announced his plans to retire in June.


Gene Wilhoit, CCSSO Executive Director Announces Retirement

The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) announced today that executive director Gene Wilhoit will retire. The CCSSO board of directors has begun a national search for a successor. Wilhoit plans to remain at CCSSO until a new executive director assumes the post.


CA Teacher Named 2012 National Teacher of the Year

April 23, 2012, Washington, DC – The Council of Chief State School Officers announced today that Rebecca Mieliwocki, a 7th grade English teacher in California is the 62nd National Teacher of the Year. Mieliwocki, along with all 2012 State Teachers of the Year will be recognized by President Barack Obama in a ceremony at the White House, on Tuesday, April 24.


CCSSO Welcomes New President and Board of Directors

The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) announced today the 2011-2012 CCSSO Board of Directors. Elections took place during the 2011 Annual Policy Forum and Business Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona. Tom Luna, Superintendent of Public Instruction in Idaho was sworn in as CCSSO president and Mitchell Chester, Commissioner of Education in Massachusetts was named president-elect.


CCSSO and the Asia Society Release Book on Global Competence

CCSSO, the Asia Society Partnership for Global Learning, and the Smithsonian will host a release of Educating for Global Competence: Preparing Our Youth to Engage the World on Wednesday, April 27 at the American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery.


CCSSO Executive Director Wilhoit Testifies before Congress on Unnecessary Federal Requirements and Regulations

CCSSO Executive Director Gene Wilhoit testified today before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Education and Workforce about federal reporting regulations and the significant state and local burdens that result. Wilhoit’s testimony focused on the importance of streamlining federal data collections; moving away from outdated models of measuring teacher quality; and improving federal program monitoring and funding audits.


New Edition of Program Evaluation Standards Released

With oversight from the Joint Committee on Standards for Educational Evaluation (JCSEE), a new edition of the Program Evaluation Standards has recently been completed and published.


CCSSO Responds to Notice of Proposed Priorities

CCSSO submitted a formal response to the U.S. Department of Education (ED)’s Notice of Proposed Priorities (NPP) for future discretionary grant programs, expressing support for ED’s decision to outline a comprehensive reform agenda designed to better allocate limited federal resources.


Voluntary, Common Data Standards Introduced

On September 10, 2010 the Common Data Standards Consortium announced that the CDS Technical Working Group (TWG) launched version 1.0 of the Common Data Standards (CDS) - a core subset of data elements to be adopted voluntarily and become widely accepted and used within and across states in both K-12 and postsecondary sectors.


CCSSO-CII Partnership Initiative to Survey SIG Implementation

CCSSO will be sending a short online survey to state-level school improvement directors. The survey is designed to collect information about local education agencies (LEAs) and schools that will be implementing at least one of the four intervention models required by the School Improvement Grants (SIG) program.
