The Education Data & Information Systems initiative engages in collective state leadership and action in three significant areas offering the greatest potential for harnessing the power of information to improve education:
- Designing robust and comprehensive state information systems and a consistent, safe, and secure information architecture
- Developing state capacity and practical resources for accessing, analyzing, and using timely information effectively
- Leading collaborative state, national, and international efforts to examine trends and patterns in education
The foundation of intelligent decision making is access to valued, actionable information. The Council develops comprehensive, high-quality resources specifically for education leaders, researchers, and policy makers to assist them in short- and long- term decision making. CCSSO tools also support students in their learning, educators in their professional development, and parents in supporting their children's education.
The Council is beginning to fill a huge void in the information enterprise; asking and answering hard questions that arise from education data. Our policy research arm is taking up the work of investigating, researching, and explaining, for example, changes in performance on state, national, and international assessments. We are collaborating on this innovative and necessary work with partners including state assessment coordinators, NCES, regional education laboratories in the Knowledge Alliance, and additional partners for international questions.
Here at the Council, we are strong advocates for next-generation data collection and use. The Information Systems and Research Initiative animates the national conversation on developing new information systems, measures, and indicators for education that will far surpass anything this nation-or any other nation-has created before.
