50-State Analysis of the Prepartion of Teachers and the Conditions for Teaching: Results from the NCES Schools and Staffing Survey

As part of the CCSSO efforts to report on indicators of education quality in our public schools, we have conducted an analysis of data from the Schools and Staffing Survey (SASS). The present report provides statistics of 50 states for several key indicators of the conditions of education in our nation’s schools:

• Percent of secondary teachers with a college major in assigned teaching field
• Percent of secondary teachers with a college major in assigned teaching field
• Assignment and organization of elementary teachers
• Elementary class time spent on core subjects
• Average class size for secondary courses
• Routes for teacher certification (how current teachers received college credits in teaching methods)
