Washington, D.C. (September 23, 2016) - The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) today voiced support for the non-regulatory guidance on English Learners and Title III that the U.S. Department of Education released.

"The Every Student Succeeds Act focuses strongly on the original purpose of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act: making sure all kids receive an equitable education. Our states care deeply about equity and are working to meet the needs of all students in the transition to this new law," said Chris Minnich, Executive Director of CCSSO.

He continued, "We are pleased the U.S. Department of Education is assisting states by releasing non-regulatory guidance that provides examples of ways to better support English Learners. This guidance will support the important work already underway in states today."

English learners make up nearly 10 percent of the student population nationwide. In its release today, the Department said it created this guidance to help states, districts and schools provide effective services to improve the English language proficiency and academic achievement of English learners.
