Nevada Chief Joins CCSSO Board of Directors

Washington, D.C. (June 15, 2017) - The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) today announced that Nevada Superintendent of Public Instruction Steve Canavero will join its 2016-2017 Board of Directors.

CCSSO's Board of Directors manages the overall business affairs of the Council and is the governing body of the organization. The board is composed of the president, the president-elect, the past president, and six directors elected by CCSSO members.

"Dr. Canavero brings the leadership he is showing in Nevada to our board as it works to ensure all kids in this country have access to an equitable education. We are honored to have him join our Board of Directors," said Chris Minnich, executive director of CCSSO.

Canavero was appointed to serve as the Nevada Superintendent of Public Instruction in February of 2016. He previously served as the deputy superintendent of student achievement at the Nevada Department of Education and prior to that served as the first director of Nevada's State Public Charter School Authority.  Canavero earned his bachelor's in Ecology and Systematic Biology from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and a PhD in educational leadership from the University of Nevada, Reno.  

"It is an honor to join my colleagues and serve on the board of the Council of Chief State School Officers," Canavero said. "I'm grateful for the opportunity to give back to an organization that has been a tremendous support to me, my agency, and Nevada."

The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) is a nonpartisan, nationwide, nonprofit organization of public officials who head departments of elementary and secondary education in the states, the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Education Activity, and five U.S. extra-state jurisdictions. CCSSO provides leadership, advocacy, and technical assistance on major educational issues. The Council seeks member consensus on major educational issues and expresses their views to civic and professional organizations, federal agencies, Congress, and the public.
