Washington, D.C. (June 23, 2014) -- The Innovation Lab Network, a network of nine states facilitated by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), and 2Revolutions, a national education design lab, today published the Roadmap for Competency-based Systems: Leveraging Next Generation Technologies.

"The Roadmap for Competency-Based Systems is just one of the many benefits of the Innovation Lab Network. Because we have a group of states working together to identify, test and implement student-centered approaches to learning, we are able to share their successes and best practices with other states and school districts across the country," said Stephen Bowen, Strategic Director for Innovation at CCSSO. "Now, through this Roadmap, state and school district leaders have a free, interactive tool they can use to guide them as they work with stakeholder groups to implement a successful competency-based education system."

Competency-based education transforms the traditional model of learning to shift the focus from seat time to mastery of content. Many states and school districts are beginning to move to a competency-based system of education because it creates personalized pathways for each student to move at their own pace and ability in order to meet their learning needs.

As more states and districts move toward this new model, technology has emerged as a critical enabler for successful implementation. The Roadmap focuses around the technology, technology policy, and conditions necessary for successful implementation. Specifically, it maps these three elements across a continuum of implementation that spans from the early implementation to transforming education systems by scaling.

The Roadmap is created to support state and district leaders in moving toward technology decisions that support implementing competency-based education by understanding the technology, policy and other conditions related to leadership, professional development and sustainability.

"States and local school districts can use this resource to better pinpoint where they are in implementing a competency-based education system today and to identify what is necessary to strengthen their efforts as they progress toward a competency-based transformation," Bowen said.

The Roadmap also includes case studies that share specific examples from the field to illustrate how next-generation technologies are supporting the work of competency-based education within existing school models.

On Tuesday, July 8 from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. ET, CCSSO's Innovation Lab Network and 2 Revolutions will host a "Dig Deep into the Roadmap for Competency-based Systems" webinar, open to all state and school district personnel interested in learning more about this interactive tool. This training will navigate you through the tool and facilitator's guide and show you the research done around technology that is helping move competency-based education forward.
