FTC Issues Guidance to Clarify COPPA and Online Tests

Over the years, many parents have asked how the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, or COPPA, applies in the school setting. These questions have been raised again recently in some communities as more states move to administer online tests this school year, such as the PARCC or Smarter Balanced assessments aligned with college- and-career-ready standards. To help clarify the issue, the Federal Trade Commission issued guidance in January explaining that COPPA doesn't apply to online tests administered by public schools.
