Washington, D.C. (January 26, 2015) -- The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) today announced two new members have joined its 2014-2015 Board of Directors.

Washington State Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn and Massachusetts Commissioner of Education Mitchell Chester were appointed to the board.

Randy Dorn has served as the Superintendent of Public Instruction in Washington State since 2009. A lifelong resident of Washington State, Dorn has been an elementary and middle school teacher, a principal and a legislator.
In his years as state superintendent, he has replaced the existing state assessment system with a shorter system, argued successfully against cuts to education funding, expanded early learning opportunities for all students and championed an updated teacher and principal evaluation system. He also established partnerships with major businesses, including Microsoft and Boeing, to help students gain real world skills they can apply to the job market or the classroom.

Mitchell Chester has served as the Commissioner of Education in Massachusetts since 2008. Chester began his career as an elementary school teacher in Connecticut, and later served as a middle school assistant principal and district curriculum coordinator. From there he moved to the Connecticut State Department of Education where he oversaw curriculum and instructional programs. In 1997, he headed the offices of Assessment, Research and Evaluation, Student and School Progress, and Pupil Information Services in Philadelphia.
In 2001 he moved to Ohio, where he served as the Senior Associate Superintendent for Policy and Accountability for the Ohio Department of Education.

"Randy Dorn and Mitchell Chester are experienced leaders in public education and will make excellent additions to CCSSO's Board of Directors," said CCSSO Executive Director Chris Minnich. "The board serves a critical role in driving the collective action of the organization, and I look forward to working with all members to ensure every student graduates ready for college, careers, and life."
