CCSSO Statement on USED’s Decision to Approve the California District CORE Waiver
CCSSO released the following statement today in response to the U.S. Department of Education's announcement to approve a waiver from NCLB for eight school districts that are part of the California Office to Reform Education (CORE):
"The U.S. Department of Education's decision to approve the California district CORE Waiver marks an unprecedented shift in the federal role in education-clearly usurping state leadership," said CCSSO Executive Director Chris Minnich. "States have raised the bar for student-focused accountability in public education, and we encourage the Secretary to continue to work with states as the appropriate leaders of these systems. Ultimately, this decision highlights the critical need for Congress to act swiftly to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education act."
