CCSSO Issues Statement on Committee Passage of House ESEA Bills
Today the House Education & the Workforce Committee marked up two pieces of legislation to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA): H.R. 3989, "Student Success Act" and H.R. 3990, "Encouraging Innovation and Effective Teachers Act". Members of the Committee voted to advance both bills out of Committee today. The next step for the legislation would be consideration by the full House of Representatives.
Gene Wilhoit, executive director of the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) released the following statement.
"CCSSO commends the House Committee on Education and the Workforce for advancing the process to reauthorize the ESEA by approving two proposals today. States need Congress to approve sustainable, viable federal education policies that recognize the importance of state leadership while ensuring a national commitment to turning around low-performing schools, closing achievement gaps, and ensuring that all students graduate ready for college or a career. CCSSO looks forward to working with Chairman Kline and congressional leaders in both parties to improve the legislation as the process moves forward."
