CCSSO Signs On as Data Privacy Champion

The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) is proud to announce it is an official Champion of Data Privacy Day. CCSSO recognizes and supports the principle that organizations, businesses and government all share the responsibility of being conscientious stewards of personal information by respecting privacy, safeguarding data and enabling trust.

"Sound data and information play a critical role as we work to make sure every child is prepared for college, careers, and life," says Chris Minnich, executive director of CCSSO. "State agencies remain committed to protecting student privacy while using data to improve instruction and raise student achievement."

CCSSO has worked closely with State School Chiefs and others in state agencies to ensure student-level data is safe and secure. Most recently, CCSSO partnered with the Data Quality Campaign to help develop DQC's Roadmap to Safeguarding Student Data. In 2013, CCSSO created the Data Privacy and Security Policy Statement for state education agencies to apply in their everyday work. CCSSO also strongly supported the Future of Privacy Forum and the Software & Information Industry Association's K-12 School Service Provider Pledge to Safeguard Student Privacy.

Today, CCSSO is proud to continue these efforts by observing Data Privacy Day on January 28, an international awareness effort to encourage Internet users to consider the privacy implications of their online actions and motivate all companies to make privacy and data protection a greater priority. Through collaborative efforts and unified, consistent messaging about data privacy, all Data Privacy Day Champions will work toward the goal of improving consumer consciousness and empowering everyone to safeguard their privacy.

Spearheaded by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), Data Privacy Day began in the United States and Canada in January 2008 as an extension of the Data Protection Day recognition in Europe. The day, January 28, commemorates the 1981 signing of Convention 108, the first legally binding international treaty addressing privacy and data protection.
