Washington, D.C. (July 6, 2016) -- The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) today sent a letter in support of the "Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act."

"Ensuring career readiness for all students is a top priority for states," CCSSO Executive Director Chris Minnich writes in the letter. "We are pleased that the 'Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act' recognizes that state and local educators are best situated to develop and implement effective education strategies to promote career readiness."

To address the skills gap that exists in this country, CCSSO in 2015 launched an ambitious career readiness initiative. Through that initiative, CCSSO is supporting states as they align K-12 career programming with the high-skill, high-demand needs of business and industry to better prepare students for success in postsecondary.

CCSSO's Career Readiness Initiative is rooted in the work of CCSSO's Career Readiness Task Force and enhanced by the New Skills for Youth initiative.

The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) is a nonpartisan, nationwide, nonprofit organization of public officials who head departments of elementary and secondary education in the states, the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Education Activity, and five U.S. extra-state jurisdictions. CCSSO provides leadership, advocacy, and technical assistance on major educational issues. The Council seeks member consensus on major educational issues and expresses their views to civic and professional organizations, federal agencies, Congress, and the public.
