CCSSO Past President to Testify at Senate Hearing

Washington, D.C. (January 27, 2015) -- The U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee has scheduled a hearing for 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 27 to discuss the role of supporting teachers and school leaders through the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). Terry Holliday, Kentucky Commissioner of Education and Past President of the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), has been asked to testify.

In his testimony, Commissioner Holliday voiced strong support for CCSSO's Key Priorities for ESEA Reauthorization. In addition, he made three critical points about reauthorization, saying Congress must look at a systemic approach to address teacher and leader development in public schools that is built in collaboration with teachers and leaders and does not require the review or approval from the U.S. Department of Education.

"In Kentucky, we have built a successful system because it was done by Kentuckians. It was our teachers, our school leaders and our community that decided what worked best for us. I want the same for my fellow state Chiefs," Holliday says.

The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) is a nonpartisan, nationwide, nonprofit organization of public officials who head departments of elementary and secondary education in the states, the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Education Activity, and five U.S. extra-state jurisdictions. CCSSO provides leadership, advocacy, and technical assistance on major educational issues. The Council seeks member consensus on major educational issues and expresses their views to civic and professional organizations, federal agencies, Congress, and the public.
