Washington, DC, October 11, 2011 -Today, Chairman Tom Harkin (D-IA), in collaboration with Senator Michael Enzi (R-WY) released a draft of comprehensive legislation to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).

CCSSO Executive Director Gene Wilhoit offered the following statement:

"CCSSO applauds Chairman Harkin and Senator Enzi for taking an essential step toward reauthorizing ESEA and we encourage the House to take similar action.  This bill, and other proposals in the Senate, recognizes the critical role states are playing by setting high expectations for all students while providing the necessary supports to ensure students reach those expectations.  States embrace our responsibility to educate all children to high levels. We are asking Congress to set a high bar for results while providing flexibility to deliver.

Our preferred path forward continues to be a reauthorized ESEA that recognizes state leadership and judgment, maintains strong accountability for all students, and promotes state and local innovations.  As the Senate moves to markup and beyond, we look forward to working with Congress to ensure the new ESEA supports these reform goals."
