Washington, D.C. (April 15, 2015) - The Council of Chief State School Officers Executive Director Chris Minnich today applauded Illinois Superintendent Christopher Koch for his leadership and strong advocacy for students.

On Wednesday, the Illinois State Board of Education named Dr. Tony Smith as the 28th Illinois State Superintendent of Education.

"Chris Koch is a thoughtful, committed, forward-thinking leader who has the distinction of being one of the longest serving state school chiefs in office today," Minnich said. "He is a strong advocate for students, who has closed achievement gaps for students and worked to make sure every child has a high-quality educator. I've had the pleasure to work with Chris as he has served on CCSSO's Board of Directors, and I value his expertise and perspective."

The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) is a nonpartisan, nationwide, nonprofit organization of public officials who head departments of elementary and secondary education in the states, the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Education Activity, and five U.S. extra-state jurisdictions. CCSSO provides leadership, advocacy, and technical assistance on major educational issues. The Council seeks member consensus on major educational issues and expresses their views to civic and professional organizations, federal agencies, Congress, and the public.
