Washington, D.C. (July 1, 2015) - The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards announced today that its president and CEO Dr. Ronald Thorpe lost his battle with cancer.

Chris Minnich, executive director of the Council of Chief State School Officers, issued the following statement: "I am saddened by the loss of Ron Thorpe, a strong leader who made it possible for more classroom teachers to take on important leadership roles within their schools and districts. His legacy will live on in the great work our teachers do every day."

Thorpe joined the National Board shortly after its 25th anniversary in 2011. During his tenure, he reinvigorated the organization with the goal of making Board certification the norm for every teacher, challenging the notion that it was an elite credential that few teachers could hope to achieve.
