Washington, D.C. (March 10, 2015) -- The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) has joined more than 30 leading education organizations from across the country to sign on to the first-ever effort to articulate foundational principles that will guide the use and protections of student information.

"State leaders in education understand how sound data and information play a critical role as we work to make sure every child is prepared for college, careers, and life. These new principles demonstrate our continued commitment to protect children's privacy at all levels in education as we work to improve learning," said Chris Minnich, the executive director of the Council of Chief State School Officers.

The principles were developed by the Data Quality Campaign (DQC) and Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) in partnership with CCSSO and other leading national education organizations. These organizations represent a broad membership of parents, teachers, principals, superintendents, state boards of education, chief technology officers and many others.

The 10 Principles for Using and Safeguarding Students' Personal Information will serve as a framework for ongoing conversations in the education community about education data and privacy. States, districts and schools can use these principles to help shape their data policies and practices now and in the future.

CCSSO is committed to using these commonly held principles in our continued work with states. CCSSO has worked closely with State School Chiefs and their staffs in state agencies to ensure student-level data is safe and secure. In 2013, CCSSO adopted a Data Privacy and Security Policy Statement for state education agencies to apply in their everyday work. CCSSO also strongly supported the Future of Privacy Forum and the Software & Information Industry Association's K-12 School Service Provider Pledge to Safeguard Student Privacy.
