Alabama Chief Joins CCSSO Board of Directors

Washington, D.C. (September 3, 2015) -- The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) today announced Alabama Superintendent Thomas Bice is joining its 2014-2015 Board of Directors.

CCSSO's Board of Directors manages the overall business affairs of the Council and is the governing body of the organization. The board is composed of the president, the president-elect, the past president, and six directors elected by CCSSO members.

"Under Tommy Bice's leadership, Alabama's high school graduation rate rose to a new record high 86 percent, and the state launched PLAN 2020 -- an ambitious plan to ensure all of its students are prepared for college and careers after high school. We are honored to have him join our Board of Directors," said Chris Minnich, executive director of CCSSO.

Tommy Bice has served as Alabama's Superintendent of Education since Jan. 1, 2012. Prior to this role, Bice served as Alabama's Deputy State Superintendent of Education for Instructional Services. He also previously served as Superintendent of the Alexander City School System and principal of Benjamin Russell High School.

Tommy began his career as a teacher at the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind, and then went on to serve as an early childhood teacher, special education school director, and career technical education director. He earned his B.S. and Ed.D. degrees from Auburn University and M.S. degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) is a nonpartisan, nationwide, nonprofit organization of public officials who head departments of elementary and secondary education in the states, the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Education Activity, and five U.S. extra-state jurisdictions. CCSSO provides leadership, advocacy, and technical assistance on major educational issues. The Council seeks member consensus on major educational issues and expresses their views to civic and professional organizations, federal agencies, Congress, and the public.
