Twenty-Seven States and DC Submit NCLB Waivers Applications

Today 27 states and the District of Columbia submitted applications to the U.S. Department of Education seeking waivers of certain provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). These waivers will allow states the flexibility to develop stronger accountability and teacher evaluation systems, and provide relief from current provisions preventing states from moving forward with reform. The 11 states that submitted waivers earlier this year in November have all been approved.
Gene Wilhoit, Executive Director of the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) issued the following statement.

"Once again we are seeing strong leadership from states as they put forth comprehensive reform plans that move us toward the goal of providing every student in the nation with a high quality education that prepares them to succeed in their future endeavors.

NCLB continues to have a stifling effect on progress that is already underway in many states, and is no longer serving the needs of students. Now, more than half of the states have put forth plans that embrace college and career ready expectations, while replacing restrictive, antiquated provisions of NCLB. These new systems hold on to the very important intent of NCLB by demonstrating an unwavering commitment to protect our most underserved students, and will help to deliver on our promise of high achievement for all students.

While we are pleased that states continue to lead by taking needed steps to make improvements to their education systems, this process has also served to reiterate what our members have been calling for all along: congressional reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. Only a reauthorized federal law will provide a clear, long-term solution for all states to implement reform measures that will create the high quality public education systems our students deserve."
