Successful Summer SCASS meeting in Detroit

CCSSO held its second round of summer State Collaboratives on Student Standards (SCASS) meetings in Detroit, MI June 23 - 25, directly following the National Conference on Student Assessment. The SCASS members convened for the third time this fiscal year to develop and disseminate original publications and products, discuss Common Core implications and Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) reauthorization, hear from field experts and engage in professional development with their peers. The meetings hosted over 250 attendees from nearly 35 states.

Other meeting highlights include:
  • A workshop held on the Connecticut Enhanced Assessment Grant (EAG) to distribute publications and celebrate the EAG's completion.
  • An update on ESEA reauthorization from Maria Worthen, Sen. Harkin's education policy advisor for Comprehensive Assessment Systems (CAS) members.
  • English Language Learners (ELL) members presented on critical issues related to ESEA reauthorization as it relates to the new federal and state policies with a focus on the performance and measurement of ELL's academic achievement.
  • Six teachers from four states to presented on state professional development and supporting teacher change on behalf of The Formative Assessment for Students and Teachers (FAST) group.
  • The Technical Issues in Large Scale Assessment (TILSA) and Accountability Systems and Reporting (ASR) collaborated on a number of issues including Race to the Top consortia proposals.
