CCSSO announced the release of a new policy brief, "Connecting High-Quality Expanded Learning Opportunities and the Common Core State Standards to Advance Student Success." Expanded learning opportunities (ELOs) are initiatives that provide safe, structured environments for additional student enrichment, personal growth, and engaged learning. ELOs include extended day/year initiatives; before- and after-school programs; Saturday, weekend, and summer programs; blended and distance learning, and early childhood education initiatives. They offer a unique strategy for rethinking the time and learning continuum in partnership among schools, community organizations, and other state and local agencies.

This brief explores ways to strengthen the connection between high-quality ELOs and the Common Core State Standards Initiative (Common Core). CCSSO is actively engaged in both efforts and wants to support states in maximizing their mutual impact to ensure success for all learners. The brief highlights policy, practice, and program examples from New York, New Hampshire, and Georgia and aims to spur dialogue and collaboration in states on how ELOs and the Common Core can align to increase learning.

The policy brief is available for download here. Please contact Taliah Givens at taliahg@ccsso.org for any questions related to CCSSO's work on expanded learning opportunities or Carrie Heath Phillips at carrieh@ccsso.org for any questions related to CCSSO's work on the Common Core State Standards.
