New Missouri Chinese Language Program Supports International Education

Kansas City infoZine (09/11/12)A memorandum of understanding between Columbia Public Schools (CPS) and the University of Missouri's Office of the Vice Provost for International Programs/Confucius Institute will enable seventh graders at several schools in the district to participate in a Chinese language program beginning in the fall of 2013. CPS teachers -- who will take part in a Chinese language training program to prepare for the new curriculum -- will co-teach Chinese with three Chinese teachers from China's Shanghai Normal University and Yunnan University of Finance and Economics. Missouri Education Commissioner Chris Nicastro says, "It is vitally important that all children have access to a world language, such as Chinese, in this increasingly competitive global economy. I applaud Columbia Public Schools and the University of Missouri on their efforts to make language and cultural diversity a priority in education."
