White: Classroom Improvements Have Taken Time
The News Star (08/05/13) Hasten, MikeLouisiana Superintendent of Education John White said that while the state's students and teachers have achieved significant classroom performance improvements, the shift has been a gradual one. He noted many changes are based on previous groundwork, but that further changes are in the pipeline. Among the possible changes are the elimination of the state's three-tiered diploma system, which offers either a career diploma, a general diploma, or a college-bound diploma, in favor of a single diploma that would provide students with different avenues toward graduation. These pathways would provide students with an opportunity to choose between a career-oriented path or a college-prep path, and would allow students to change paths at any time. To achieve this goal, White wants to "break down the silos" and have business, higher education, and K-12 education work cooperatively on a solution that benefits students. He noted that teachers need support from their schools, districts, and states as they implement high standards. The new teacher accountability system Compass is being implemented across the state.
