What Tests Will Replace FCAT? Florida to Decide by June

Orlando Sentinel (FL) (05/15/13) Postal, Leslie

Florida Education Commissioner Tony Bennett says that by the end of June, he and his staff will decide what tests will be used to replace the FCAT exams that the state plans to retire. The switch to the new tests will be aligned to the new Common Core standards scheduled to take effect in the 2014-15 school year. Bennett says the decision will be based on six "non-negotiables," including the timelines and technology requirements to fully introduce the tests and whether they will work for Florida. He has said his "intent will be that we do it with a focus of having assessments that are useful for multiple purposes," adding that the main concern is about finding "the right amount of assessment for Florida." If Bennett and his staff do not decide to replace FCAT with the Partnership for the Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers exams, Florida could consider exams created by the makers of the ACT and SAT or exams developed by other states to meet the Common Core.
