Wash. Schools Boss Aims to Cut 2 Graduation Exams
Bellingham Herald (WA) (02/07/13) Blankinship, Donna GordonBeginning with 2013's sophomores, Washington state students will have to pass five different tests to graduate. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn wants to see the state reduce that requirement to three graduation exams and transfer the majority of grading for the test alternative, known as "collection of evidence," to local school districts. His proposal would eventually replace the reading and writing test with a combined exam, and he would eliminate the geometry test as a graduation requirement but keep algebra and biology. Dorn notes that such changes could lead to a yearly savings of $20 million in the state budget. This news brief was summarized for Chiefline, CCSSO's weekly newsletter.
