Virginia's On-Time Graduation Rate for Class of 2012 Rises to 88 Percent, Dropout Rate Falls

Washington Post (10/23/12)

The Virginia Department of Education says the on-time graduation rate for the Class of 2012 was 88 percent, up more than one percentage point from the previous class and more than 7 percent since the department began reporting on-time graduation rates in 2008. Graduation rates rose 2.4 percentage points for black students, 1.8 percentage points for Hispanic students, and 1.8 percentage points for disadvantaged students. Additionally, the dropout rate for students who were freshmen in 2008 was 6.5 percent, versus 7.2 percent for the previous class. "[The statewide improvements are the result of efforts to provide] struggling and sometimes troubled students with the instruction, support, and encouragement they needed to persevere and complete their diploma requirements," says Virginia Superintendent of Public Instruction Patricia Wright.
