Virginia Board of Education Approves Graduation Requirements for Special Education Students
Richmond Times-Dispatch (VA) (03/28/13) Reid, ZacharyThe Virginia Board of Education has adopted revised high school graduation standards for students with disabilities so that they can remain on track to earn diplomas, even as the state eliminates the Modified Standard Diploma. The students would earn diplomas by learning the required material in different ways. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Patricia I. Wright says, "This will hold the standards high and maintain the rigor but acknowledge that children reach the finish line in many different ways." The board also adopted minimum Standards of Learning (SOL) scores for new reading tests for grades 3-8. Virginia has taken on "a very methodical process," says Wright, noting that the state will phase in new material.
