Vilaseca Keeps Vermont's Top Education Job, Now as Secretary
Burlington Free Press (VT) (01/03/13) Hallenbeck, TerriArmando Vilaseca was named Vermont's first secretary of education, but he will only remain in the position for one year as the department transitions into an agency overseen by the governor. Vilaseca said, "It's my responsibility to do what I can to make this transition smooth." Gov. Peter Shumlin's decision to keep Vilaseca over the other two potential candidates drew praise from those who have worked with him, who noted the importance of the new secretary's understanding of both the political climate and teacher relationships. Board of Education Chair Stephan Morse said the one-year appointment is good, though he expressed surprise at Vilaseca's desire to only hold his position for one more year as a way to provide continuity during the agency's transition.
