Vermont Adopts the Next Generation Science Standards

Vermont Agency of Education (06/26/13)

In a unanimous vote, the Vermont State Board of Education adopted the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), joining four other states -- Rhode Island, Kansas, Kentucky, and Maryland. Vermont was one of 26 states that partnered to develop the new voluntary, internationally benchmarked standards based on the National Research Council's "A Framework for K-12 Science Education." NGSS establishes educational goals that can give K-12 students the skills and knowledge they need to be informed citizens, college ready, and prepared for STEM careers. State Education Secretary Armando Vilaseca says, "Adopting the standards is a step in the right direction." The standards -- which will make connections with the Common Core Standards for math and English/language arts -- aim to make science learning from grade-to-grade more cohesive and emphasize hands-on learning and the critical examination of scientific evidence. "Along with the adoption of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), NGSS is another tool for our schools. We are looking at multiple ways in which we can prepare our kids for life beyond high school, giving them as many options and opportunities as possible," Vilaseca explains.
