Union, Hawaii Department of Education Agree on New Evaluations for Principals
Associated Press (01/25/13)The Hawaii Department of Education and the Hawaii Government Employees Association, which represents public school principals in the state, recently reached an agreement on evaluations to rate principals on student outcomes and leadership. The evaluations will assess the professional growth and learning of principals, their school planning and progress, school culture, professional qualities and instructional leadership, and stakeholder support and engagement. State Superintendent of Education Kathryn Matayoshi says both her department and the union aim to better emphasize the importance of school leadership. Principals will be given the new evaluations during the 2013-14 school year, and the department will use feedback to hone the system the following school year.
