New guidance released by USED's PTAC on Data Privacy

As states move to pass their own legislation around student data privacy issues, the U.S. Department of Education (USED)'s Privacy and Techincal Assistance Center (PTAC) issued updated guidlines this week on the proper use, storage, and security of student level data. Included in their report is the recommendation that third-party vendors limit their use of student data to educational purposes. The guidelines include both requirements (primarily reiterating and clarifying FERPA) and best practices. Ed Week's 'Digital Education' blog includes full coverage of the new guidelines which are both, "non-binding and contain no new regulations."
