Torlakson Directs $622 Million in State Funding to Help School Districts Bring Common Core Standards to Life
YubaNet.com (09/03/13)California Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson announced that schools will receive $622 million in new funding at the beginning of the school year to support the transition to the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The funding release is the first half of the $1.25 billion earmarked in the state budget to support the transition, and the second half is scheduled to be released in October. Torlakson said school districts will be able to determine how their share of the funds is used, whether to buy new materials or technology, or to train teachers. "We're challenging every part of our education system to remodel itself, and, step by step, give students the tools to achieve their dreams. And after year's of cuts and turmoil, we're finally able to start making the investment necessary to turn those dreams into a reality," he said. Torlakson also announced the launch of a new online tool developed by the California Department of Education designed to provide school districts with suggestions and resources to help them develop plans to implement the CCSS.
