Texas Is Changing How It Evaluates Teachers. What Will That Look Like?

At an all-day meeting at Grand Prairie's Dallas Baptist University -- the first of five meetings -- Texas Education Commissioner Michael Williams said the state needs to focus on student growth. "Irrespective of the background that a youngster has, irrespective of the challenges at home, or whether the parents are engaged in his or her learning or not, we do expect that teacher to move that child in some positive direction. And that's why the focus is on growth," he said. "I think there's an opportunity to design a system where student evaluations of their instructors will be a part [of the evaluations.]" Williams said he hopes to roll out a new statewide teacher evaluation system in two years.
