Tennessee Selects More Than 700 Teachers to Help Lead Common Core Transition

Clarksville (Tenn.) Leaf-Chronicle (03/29/13)

More than 700 teachers have been selected by the Tennessee Department of Education to help their peers transition to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) by leading five weeks of summer training sessions for math, English/language arts, and literacy standards. These teachers were chosen to act as coaches through a rigorous application process, and they will be trained through spring sessions to ensure they can help more than 35,000 teachers across the state. Millicent Smith, executive director of curriculum, instruction, and professional development for Knox County Schools, praises the CCSS and says they will empower teachers to push students to meet higher expectations. "Great teachers hold students accountable to their individual potentials. I believe these changes will truly build the capacity of our teachers to challenge all students to explore their full potential from the time they first enter school," she notes. Tennessee Department of Education Assistant Commissioner for Curriculum and Instruction Emily Barton says, "We believe the transition to Common Core will be most effective if our own teachers lead the way. I am so inspired by this group of teachers-our state's transition to Common Core is in good hands." The state began implementing the CCSS last year and students are slated to take new assessments reflecting CCSS in both math and English/language arts in 2014-15 school year.
