Teachers Receive More Training on Common Core Standards
The Advocate (06/14/13) Sills, MarshaThe Louisiana Department of Education recently held a training session for 2,000 teacher leaders on the implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). These teachers were selected by their districts to train their colleagues and reach out to parents. In an informal Q&A session with 120 teachers on June 13, State Superintendent of Education John White emphasized that districts and schools will decide how to implement the standards. Some teachers said the training empowered them to tailor their instruction using the CCSS but that the district would mandate its own curriculum related to the standards. "Our view is ... principals should run their school buildings and teachers should run (classrooms)," White said. "We can't enforce it, but we can demonstrate it and hope people follow it." He added that resource materials on the CCSS will be provided by the state, with sample unit lessons for each grade level for math and English language arts to be rolled out this summer.
