Teacher Evaluation Report Released by State Education Department
New Jersey.com (02/05/13) Rundquist, JeanetteTwo reports released by the New Jersey Department of Education show that a "collective refocus" on what constitutes good teaching occurred as part of a pilot teacher evaluation program in 10 school districts in 2012. One paper by researchers at the Rutgers Graduate School of Education uncovered variations in reviews within schools and found that 74 percent of administrators and 32 percent of teachers believe the new evaluations accurately assess educators. The pilot program is part of an effort to create a new teacher evaluation system that will be based on classroom observation and student progress, with the system to be rolled out statewide in September. "We are confident that we are putting the pieces in place to fully launch a system that helps all educators improve their practice by next school year," says State Education Commissioner Christopher Cerf. This news brief was summarized for Chiefline, CCSSO's weekly newsletter.
