Teacher Career Paths Focus of Bill
Press-Citizen (01/14/13) Stegmeir, MaryIowa Gov. Terry Branstad's issued an $187 million education reform proposal, and the centerpiece of the plan is the creation of new career paths for teachers, who could receive pay bumps for taking on extra duties. The proposal also includes salary increases for first-year teachers and bonus pay for those who work at high-need schools. Jason Glass, Iowa Department of Education director, said the reforms would be paid for from the state's general fund, which currently has an $800 million surplus. Glass comments the plan would reach full implementation within five years, and he notes that this the perfect time for "a substantial investment in our schools." He believes that including leadership roles for top teachers will help improve the quality of classrooms throughout the state.
